But it was a long time ago this story is actually set before the Trojan War , so I guess it was just a different age. Anyway, if you want to read the ancient version of this story, you have two choices: Jason and the Golden Fleece by Apollonius of Rhodes written in the third century b. Flaccus died before completing his version. Apollonius made some interesting choices in his version, including his portrayal of Jason.
It all makes for a very different and rather refreshing take on the epic genre. The Latin epics of the Silver Age tend to be uniformly dismissed as feeble imitations of Virgil, but I thought this was pretty good.
Slavitt's more recent effort is much more readable, though he rather overeggs the pudding sometimes - eg the two words "Unde tubae[? Jun 25, Nicholas Whyte rated it liked it. I must admit I found the Mozley translation for the Loeb Classicsc almost impenetrable. Nov 14, Nathan rated it liked it.
Gaius Valerius Flaccus - Wikipedia
A Romanized version of the Greek epic, up to the flight of the Argonauts with Medea abridged due to the untimely death of the author. Lacks some of the Greek version's charm but the supporting characters emerge more fully developed in this version. Valerius Flaccus is not a widely read Roman author, and wasn't even in antiquity.

He shows all the dangers of a writer who has read too much and is paralyzed by his reading.
